250+ Diabetes Specialist Nurses gather at our game-changing event

In October 2024, more than 250 diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs) from across the UK came together in London for DSN Forum Live: an event filled with insights, inspiring stories, and the latest in diabetes care.

The conference, held at the Copthorne Tara Kensington hotel, kicked off with a special evening symposium on October 2nd, followed by a full day of activities on October 3rd.

What made this year even more special? For the first time, one sponsor provided overnight accommodation, dinner and symposia for more than 200 nurses, allowing everyone to focus on what matters: learning, sharing, and celebrating the incredible work DSNs do.

A gathering of experts and new ideas

The event was jam-packed with expert talks and debates on topics ranging from innovative treatments to patient care. Dr. Clare Hambling, NHSE Clinical Director, discussed the latest strategies in diabetes prevention and care, including the importance of weight management and national targets.

Then there was Professor Partha Kar, who shone a light on the pivotal role DSNs play in supporting people living with diabetes. From the latest tech to the way they connect with patients, his talk was both informative and motivating. Watch the video here

Delegates then heard from Professor Richard Holt of the University of Southampton, who highlighted the additional challenges of living with diabetes for those with autism and other neurodiversity. His presentation explored the prevalence of diabetes in these communities and how to improve individual care. See Richard’s presentation here

A lively debate that changed minds

Later, as part of the highly entertaining and insightful Big Debate, four key speakers took to the stage. Mr Ahmed Ahmed explained the benefits of bariatric surgery; Dr Eveleigh Nicholson argued for weight loss injections; Professor Mike Lean represented diet, exercise and common sense, while Dr Rose Stewart highlighted the benefits of a psychological approach to weight management.

Dr Matt Capehorn chaired the very lively discussion, which proved to be very influential. At the outset delegates voted that injections, diet and exercise were the most effective approach, but following the debate, psychology won the majority of support from the DSNs.  View the Big Debate here.

Real-Life Insights from Nurses

Two standout sessions came from DSNs themselves. Lynne Wooffe, Rebecca Lace, and Sam Dorney-Smith shared powerful stories about their work with homeless patients through the Bolton Diabetes Management Programme. Their dedication and compassion have transformed the lives of over 200 patients. Watch the video

Rahab Hashim’s research into sexual dysfunction in premenopausal women with type 1 diabetes earned her an award and opened up an important conversation about an often-overlooked issue in diabetes care. See the video

Celebrating unsung heroes

One of the most touching moments of the event was the presentation of the inaugural Unsung Hero Award. Amanda Williams, DSN Forum founder, gave the award to Ann Marie Koroma, ‘matron’ at a clinic in Sierra Leone, via a heartwarming WhatsApp call.

Despite the challenges she faces daily, Ann Marie’s work in diabetes care has been life-saving in her community. Seeing 250 nurses from the UK applaud her dedication was a moving moment for everyone.

A look ahead to 2025

As the event wrapped up, Amanda Williams shared her excitement for the future, already hinting at plans for DSN Forum Live 2025. “It’s so inspiring to hear our speakers highlight the crucial role that DSNs play in enhancing diabetes care. Everyone left feeling motivated and energised, and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together next year!”

With 100% of attendees saying they’d recommend DSN Forum Live to their colleagues, it’s safe to say this event has become a must-attend for anyone in the world of diabetes care.

Celebrating a wonderful team

It’s with glowing pride that we look back on this event - the extended LKOTT team is the best in the business. Always smiling, attention to detail off the scale while beavering away till the small hours to make it all happen. It takes a whole year’s planning to get these events off the ground - and we love it.

Comments from our delegates

Excellent day! Loads of interesting presentations. Inspired by the range of presentations from different professionals in alternative spheres of the diabetes provision. Would definitely recommend to my DSN colleagues.
Fantastic day. Excellent speakers. Will really impact my practice for the better. Great venue. Thank you very much.
I feel extremely privileged to have spent time with such inspirational and motivated speakers.

Working in diabetes and being somebody who lives with type 1 diabetes can be a real challenge, but this conference has highlighted the passion each of us feels, which is like no other specialty I have worked in before - amazing!

I am proud to be a DSN and so, so fortunate to live with type 1 in 2024!
Fantastic. My colleagues and I would not have been able to attend without the overnight stay as we live in North Durham. I am a single mum and would have struggled financially to pay for this opportunity myself. A HUGE thank you to the sponsors!
